Transformational Coping - June 2008

When we are faced with work and life situations that are overwhelming, it is good to choose coping mechanisms that are transformational rather than regressive.

Some transformational copers are:

  • Control: looking at and affecting what we can control
  • Commitment: belief in ones goals and outcomes
  • Challenge: viewing the situation as positive; an opportunity for creativity
  • Perspective: having a larger perspective of the situation helps one cope with the ups and downs along the way

Control, commitment and challenge are sometimes called hardiness factors.

Going beyond a narrow view to a bigger picture helps us see a larger perspective, and relate a larger meaning to the event in the context of others, the team, the organization and the community.

Creating time for a new perspective also helps us attract a larger community of people into our lives, and more meaning in our search for effective leadership.
